Opticians specialize in fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses and providing advice on vision care. An optician is responsible for providing excellent customer service and ensuring that customers receive the best eye care possible.
The primary duties of an optician include helping customers select the best frames and lenses for their vision and lifestyle needs. Opticians must take accurate measurements of the patient's eyes, determine the prescription, and help customers select frames that suit their facial features. They must also advise on how to care for and use contact lenses properly.
In addition to their duties in the store, opticians must stay up-to-date on the latest advances in ophthalmology and optometry. They must be knowledgeable about the different types of lenses, frames, and contact lenses available and be able to explain the benefits and drawbacks of each. They must be able to recommend treatments and products that will help patients achieve their vision goals.
Opticians must also be able to answer questions from customers, help them select the best eyewear for their needs, and explain vision insurance and payment policies. They must be able to diagnose and address minor eye problems, such as redness or irritation, and refer customers to an ophthalmologist or optometrist for more severe problems. Finally, opticians must be able to maintain accurate records of customer prescriptions and purchases. They must also be able to keep the store organized and clean.
